OHF History
Initial conversations about starting a music festival celebrating the works of Haydn began in the summer of 2011. A passionate group of old college friends met to discuss the fact that an Oklahoma City-based music festival dedicated to the works of a single composer would fill a need for both audiences and musicians. The music of Haydn was natural choice, and a bit of research revealed the absence of an annual Haydn festival anywhere in the United States. We considered the extensive catalog of orchestral, chamber, choral, and operatic works available, and the myriad of programming options seemed both limitless and exciting.
Telephone calls were made, and many former contacts were re-established, as the inaugural orchestra concert took place in June of 2012.The next two seasons expanded literature to include chamber music and choral performances. While the majority of the 70-plus musicians who have performed with OHF have been Oklahomans, the festival has also drawn performers from 8 states. New projects continue to be added: in 2014, the festival began performing outreach chamber concerts; in 2016, the OHF collaborated with Painted Sky Opera to produce La Canterina; and in 2017, and a pub series was added. Oklahoma Haydn Festival has commissioned three works based on themes by Haydn, and plans to continue supporting the work of up-and-coming composers in the coming years.
Future plans include chamber music performances in all 77 Oklahoma counties. We hope you will join us in our continuing exploration of this underrated, humorous, and astonishing composer.
